Augmented Realiy (AR)-browser Wikitude 4.0 for Symbian

The free Augmented Realiy (AR)-browser Wikitude 4.0 is now made available for a plethora of Symbian phones. Since Nokia’s operating system Symbian is supported back to its 3rd generation, for the first time phones without a touchscreen are capable of using Augmented Reality technology.
Until today Augmented Reality was only available for users with touchscreen capable smartphones. This is about to change with our Wikitude 4.0 version for Symbian phones“, says Martin Lechner, CTO of Mobilizy at last week’s CTIA conference in Las Vegas. „The challenge was to keep the navigation simple and self-declaring even without the availability of a touchscreen. That’s what we’ve accomplished.“

Wikitude 4.0 displays geocoded information from more than 200 various „worlds“ (from services such as Flickr, Qype, Wikipedia, YouTube, etc.) in the phone’s camera view. Users are able to configure those „worlds“ by themselves and can create additional Augmented Reality „worlds“ without any programming knowledge.
About Wikitude
Wikitude determine’s the iPhones current location via GPS and thereafter merges the real world with a virtual layer. Once the iPhone is being pointed at a certain spot, a layer of additional information about real-world objects, overlays the iPhone’s camera view. Thus a user pointing an iPhone towards Vienna Stephansdom get’s a Wikipedia entry about the building.
