What’s 4G?
4G is the latest standard in wireless cellular phone service. It’s a successor to 2G and 3G. In each case, the “G” is for “generation.” Phones in the 4G generation have download speeds up to ten times faster than those of 3G phones.

What’s the Big Deal?
With 4G phones, stationary users and pedestrians can expect peak download speeds of 1 gigabit/second. Passengers on trains and in automobiles can enjoy download speeds of up to 100 megabits/second. These transmission standards mean that ultra-fast Internet access can be enjoyed through mobile broadband. Depending on the phone, you can use features such as phone-based video chat, mobile HDTV, IP telephony, and peer-to-peer gaming.

Top 4G Phones at CES
Motorola, Samsung, and LG were among the manufacturers debuting 4G mobile phones and tablets at CES this year. Here are some of their new models.
1. The Motorola Atrix 4G won the 2011 award for Best of CES. Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo), Motorola’s Atrix is the first smartphone with dual core processing, and it sets a new standard for webpage loading speeds and graphics rendering. This Android smartphone includes a Firefox browser and supports word processing. The large screen with best-in-class resolution plus a full keyboard make the unit a handy office-on-the-go. For extra security with a James Bond feel, activate the phone’s fingerprint scanner.
2. The Infuse is the latest addition to Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone family. It features a 4.5” touchscreen, one of the largest in the industry. The extra-sharp screen is specially designed to reduce glare outdoors. This phone also has two cameras for filming and videoconferencing. It’s specially equipped to support Facebook, Picasa, and Twitter. Infuse is powered by Android 2.2.
3. LG made the most of the Consumer Electronics Show by launching its first tablet phone. The LG G-Slate tablet stands out for its integration with Google features: interactive Google Maps 5.0, Google Talk, Google Books, and more. It’s powered by Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), a processor designed especially for tablets.

The Verdict
Is buying a 4G phone a necessity? Not yet, for most of us – although it’s definitely appealing. Still, there’s no question that 4G is the new industry standard for 2011. By year’s end, phone-based videoconferencing, phone-to-TV technology, and other 4G benefits just might be taken for granted. Look for mobile phone plans that make the most of these new data transfer capabilities.
