MeeGo Conference 2011 sights and sounds

So the MeeGo Conference is winding down here in San Francisco and we have prowled the exhibitor area over the past couple of days to bring you a taste of what's stimulated our eyes and ears at the event so far. We got to play with the Indamixx 2 music tablet -- basically an iiView M1Touch Pine Trail tablet running an audio-optimized build of MeeGoo 1.2 Tablet UX which features a customized kernel for more real-time control and better audio scheduling. It's expected to ship for $700 in "June or July" complete with DAW and DJ apps. Next we came across a MeeGo-based in-vehicle entertainment system that's currently available in cars from Chinese manufacturer Hawtai Motor.More after the break...

MeeGo 1.2 lands for netbooks and tablets, leaves handsets hanging on the telephone

Just because Nokia has done everything short of taping a "Dear John" letter to MeeGo's mirror doesn't mean the OS is dead. In fact, Intel's Linux-based baby just got a refresh to version 1.2. So what's new this go around? Well, primarily it's under the hood stuff, like improved Atom support and bug fixes out the ying yang. New audio and networking stacks have also been added for A2DP streaming and HSPA+ support. The tablet UI that Intel was showing off in February is has arrived, to complement the standard netbook version and the in-car interface. Sadly, the handset edition was left out of this update. Nokia's leaked MeeGo device resembles dual-core ST-Ericsson U8500 reference platform

Yesterday's leaked image of a purported Nokia tablet device seems to have been more informative than we initially believed it to be. An eagle-eyed forum member over on mobile-review has spotted the similarity between it and a reference platform for ST-Ericsson's U8500 system-on-chip. Last we heard, that little powerhouse was running a pair of 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 cores, so excuse us if we find the prospect of it driving Nokia's next flagship a rather exciting one. You can see video of the reference device in question after the break -- it ends on the delicious and unequivocal assertion from the ST-Ericsson rep that Nokia has signed up to deliver the U8500 in an upcoming device. Bear in mind, however, that the video is from November of last year and we still don't know for sure that the Nokia slate above is its MeeGo progenitor or just a prototype. Either way, the U8500 is expected in smartphones at some point in the first half of this year, which kind of fits Nokia's roadmap, no?  Video after the break...

MEEGO 1.0 ON MANY DEVICES AND SCREEN SIZES

At the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing in April 2010, the new software platform MeeGo was demonstrated on a variety of Internet connected devices from a netbook to Internet TV to smartphone and digital coupon machine with RFID. 

FLASHING THE NOKIA N900 WITH THE MEEGO OS

Nokia and Intel are developing the Meego OS. Here is a first look at flashing the N900 with Meego.

MEEGO FINALLY AVAILABLE FOR THE NOKIA N900....

Today is the culmination of a huge effort by the worldwide Nokia and Intel teams to share the MeeGo operating system code with the open source community. This is the latest step in the full merger of Maemo and Moblin, and we are happy to open the repositories and move the ongoing development work into the open – as we set out to do from the beginning.
What are we opening? The MeeGo distribution infrastructure and the operating system base from the Linux kernel to the OS infrastructure up to the middleware layer. The MeeGo architecture is based on a common core across the different usage models, such as netbooks, handheld, in-vehicle, and connected TV. The MeeGo common core includes the various key subsystems including the core operating system libraries, the comms and telephony services, internet and social networking services, visual services, media services, data management, device services, and personal services. More on this will be described on meego.com over the next few days.
The downloaded images will boot from a USB stick or directly flashed on the device from your Linux PC, but since the MeeGo User Experiences for the usage models mentioned previously are not yet included in today’s MeeGo core, these images will boot into terminal.
After Day 1, the rest will follow soon – in the next few days, we will post the next steps leading to the first release of MeeGo in May.

MeeGo Repositories and Images

The available MeeGo repositories now include the operating system base from the Linux kernel to the OS infrastructure up to the middleware layer. The downloadable images available now will boot from a CD or from a USB stick, but since the MeeGo User Experiences for the usage models are not yet included in today’s MeeGo core, these images will boot into terminal.

MeeGoo REPOSITORY COMING TO THE NOKIA N900

Nokia Employee Valtteri Halla has said that MeeGo’s repository is to open to the Nokia N900 later this month.  There is no indication that this will mean that the N900 will be an eventual target device for MeeGo but news of the Repository could be the start of good things to come.
