Nokia collects design patent for a tablet, evokes N8 aesthetics (update: there's another one!)

It's no secret that Nokia's been casting an interested eye over the tablet market and now we have a bit of extra evidence to show its intent, courtesy of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The federal bureau has just published a design patent granted to the Finnish company for a tablet device, which was applied for on May 28th, 2010. Sadly, that date tells us what we're looking at is most probably a shelved MeeGo machine that never made it to market rather than an upcoming world conqueror, but still, here it is for all of us to gawk at and admire. Judging by the 3.5mm headphone jack outline -- which, like the rest of the dotted lines on the sketch, isn't covered by the patent -- we're likely looking at a 9- or 10-inch slate, whose design reminds us most acutely of Nokia's N8 phone. See more pics in the gallery below before returning to your mind cave to fantasize about what might have been... or might still be.More pics and update after the break...

Windows Phone's new UI and Xbox games are most exciting aspects of Microsoft deal, says Nokia poll

In search for feedback on its momentous decision to dump Symbian in favor of Windows Phone, Nokia has put up the above poll on its Conversations website canvassing opinions about what users anticipate most out of the new deal. There's no consensus choice, with the equivocation of reactions being underlined by the fact that the "Other" option was the modal response, however of the given categories, a UI refresh and Xbox-related gaming boons turned out to be most important. No surprises there, Symbian's touchscreen UI shortcomings are well known about while the Xbox tie-up has been one of Microsoft's big selling points for Windows Phone 7 since its start. We'd just ask Nokia to be quick about delivering on these things -- spending too long in anticipation mode won't be good for our health.

Nokia reportedly planning 'organizational changes,' mobile phones exec on the outs

Looks like Capital Markets Day is shaping up to be quite the barnburner for Nokia. In the wake of news that Microsoft and Nokia may have some sort of tie-up in the works, Germany weekly Wirtschaftswoche is reporting that newly appointed CEO Stephen Elop will be bidding adieu to a number of high-ranking officials. Citing "company sources," the paper stated that Mary T. McDowell, a bigwig in the mobile phones unit, as well as Niklas Savander, the manager of the markets unit, could be on the outs. Moreover, Kai Oistamo (Chief Development Officer) and Tero Ojanpera, the manager responsible for services and mobile solutions, may also be enjoying their final weekends as Nokia employees. It's all part of a monumental strategy shift, and if it all pans out, it'll be Elop's first major move since taking over as CEO last September. Of course, Anssi Vanjoki more or less left on his own accord, and the company has essentially forged ahead with little to no change since. We're told that Nokia has hired headhunters to scout top people to fill said slots, but it's hard to say why Elop feels that new brains are needed. Here's hoping it's the start of something... competitive. Update after the break...

NOKIA GOING ANDROID???

One of my sources just confirmed that something big is going to happen very soon at Nokia (probably next Friday). Perhaps the rumors about Nokia is going Android are true? Lets wait and see…

Nokia, Microsoft announcing partnership next week, possibly involving Windows Phone 7?

As Nokia comes up on Capital Markets Day next Friday -- an event where the company has historically unveiled interesting things and launched important initiatives -- rumors are once again swirling that they're going to be announcing a major platform shift by way of a competitor. Both Android and Windows Mobile have come up in the past on multiple occasions, owing in no small part to the fact that Nokia's had an outward appearance of spinning its platform wheels on the backs of S60 and Maemo for far, far too long, but so far, nothing's materialized. This time around, it's said that Microsoft will be the partner announced on the 11th -- and though Nokia's uptake of Windows Phone 7 would be the obvious strategic shift, it's important to note that these companies have actually partnered before with pretty trivial consequences for the market; it's entirely possible they could be ramping up to do that again, sharing apps and services between Windows Phone 7 and S60 / MeeGo. We doubt it, but it's within the realm of reason.More after the break...

NOKIA HINTS AT SWITH TO ANDROID

Wall Street Journal published that Nokia is preparing to make a radical break with the past and can adopt a new OS on their phones. Could this mean new Android or WP7 devices from Nokia?
On a conference call following the Finnish mobile phone giant’s fourth-quarter report, Mr. Elop talked about Nokia’s need to change rapidly in a fast-changing market place, and to consider “multiple ecosystem patterns”. Investors interpreted the comments as a sign that Nokia might be preparing to adopt a new smartphone platform, and traded up the company’s shares following a sharp dip earlier Thursday in the wake of its bleak first-quarter outlook.

NOKIAS PROFIT FALLS WITH 26% IN CHALLENGING MARKET

Nokia, the world’s largest cellphone maker,  posted today a smaller-than-expected decline in fourth-quarter net profit as strong sales in the key end-year holiday period boosted earnings, but the company said it faces competitive challenges. Net profit for the three months to Dec. 31 was EUR745 million, down from EUR948 million a year earlier but ahead of analysts’ expectations for EUR526 million.More after the break....

NOKIA MARKET SHARE DOWN IN NORDICS

Mobile phone merchant 20:20 Mobile says Nokia has taken a back seat in the Nordic smart phone market, Finnish business daily Kauppalehti reports Tuesday. U.K.-based 20:20 Mobile Group distributes mobile devices to 4,000 outlets in Nordic countries.
  • Almost all smart phones now sold are either Apple or Android–Nokia handsets just do not sell,” 20:20 Mobile Sweden’s Managing Director Fredrik Rudberg told the newspaper.
  • The Nokia]N8 sold very well right after the launch in Sweden and Norway, but Nokia does not have other smart phones in the highest price range,” Rudberg is quoted as saying.
According to the report, Apple had 14% of the Swedish mobile phone market in 2010. In Finland, Apples market share is lower than in Sweden, but it’s increasing,” Rudberg said. Nokia is expected to report fourth quarter earnings Thursday, Jan. 27.
