Happy EVO 4G owners get Gingerbread update, right on schedule

Right on schedule, Sprint made Gingerbread available to any and all EVO 4G owners willing to check for the update manually (and if you're a fan of this site, we suspect you are). As a PSA, you won't just be getting Android 2.3, but also Gmail and SMS fixes, and a tweak for the phone's power management software. We've been getting a flood of tips from delighted readers in various markets who report the upgrade went smoothly. Can't be bothered to check for updates? Radio Shack taking EVO 4G preorders for $50 deposit, will toss in $20 for accessories

Between Sprint and Best Buy locations, there shouldn't be any shortage of opportunities to score an EVO 4G next month -- assuming inventory holds up, of course -- but Radio Shack's getting in the game, too, and it's sweetening the deal just a little bit. If you reserve a phone prior to launch by purchasing a $50 gift card (which you'll presumably use in June to help pay for the purchase), they'll toss in a $20 credit toward accessories when you come back in. Of course, these days, that doesn't even get you all the way to affording a freaking wall charger, but it's better than a punch in the nose.

HTC EVO 4G earns FCC's blessing, WiMAX and all

Looking at hundreds of FCC documents each and every week, it's pretty difficult for us to get too excited about any particular filing, but there are two words that do it for us each and every time: "LTE" and "WiMAX." In this case, the latter word caught our eye all throughout the filing for HTC model PC36100, which runs WiMAX on Sprint's (and Clearwire's) 2500MHz band alongside the standard suite of CDMA bands with EV-DO. In other words, folks, yes -- it's true -- you're looking at the frickin' EVO 4G for Sprint. There's not much to see here, really; it's still under confidentiality for the external photos, but at least they've cleared that all-important FCC hurdle on the way to retail, which will be... soon, Sprint? Right? Please?

The most interesting thing about it however, is that it’s the first phone in the United States to support Sprint’s WiMAX 4G network. This allows it to take advantage of better video streaming, faster data connectivity and a 1.3MP front-facing camera for video calls. It has HTC’s renowned Sense UI on top of Android 2.1, which means users will have access to thousands of applications. Another premium feature of the smartphone is the 8MP camera with HD video recording capabilities.

SPRINT HTC EVO 4G - FIRST 4G DEVICE

Greg Kumparak gets a hands on demo with the EVO 4G, otherwise known as the HTC Supersonic. HTC EVO 4G is similar to the HTC HD2 and equipped with 4.3-inch display, WiMAX support and fast processor integrated into a thin body. The HTC EVO 4G is running Android 2.1 and HTC Sense interface.
